Brainstorming of ideas continued. During the process, we began to consider various aspects that connect us to the possible sculptural installation and this lead to realizing our geographical location was the highlight of our discussions. Living on an island is what defines us where the ocean is the most important factor to each of us. The sounds we began investigating on were those from the ocean. Sounds produced by sea creatures, humans diving and waves.

Our intention to replicate Nature as we know it became our focus. Bringing water into our creative process became our prime focus. Running water, bubble in water and water dropping onto metal, stone and in a puddle were part of investigation.

Our first draft and maquette

realization of the sculptural form through drawing

While reviewing our first form, we revisiting our intention, Nature, and were not able to ignore the human impact on the environment and this lead to further investigation into how our needs are impacting the ocean.

Mauritius has an incredible array of marine life as well a large coral reef which is on the verge of dying. Plastics that are thrown in the oceans every year which are ingested by marine animals such as fish and turtles. Once we feared of consuming too much mercury in fish but now with the alarming numbers of fish ingesting plastic, we should be worried about ingesting plastics when eating fish.

While carrying out the research for our second draft, we came across a video named Plastikophia https://plastikophobia.com; https://youtu.be/F6A4vGKOQE4 which is actually an installation made out 18,000 plastic cups collected from various locations. This artwork evokes the fear through feeling entrapped within plastic! Von Wong and his team creating the installation are envisioning to mobilize people in spreading awareness and making good decisions.

His approach to the subject of what we consider beautiful and aesthetically strong while working with unconventional materials and those that are supposed to be part of a landfill or dumping, is amazing.

The impact of our investigation and stages of brainstorming is evident in our next stage- The creative process.

We are 6 DP Year 1 Visual Arts students working on this project and shall keep updating as progress and create our Sound Sculpture.
